We are researching the BURIAN surname and its variants as BURJAN, BURYAN, BURGYAN.

 

The results are organized into following groups:

 

Names mentioned in documents before 1800.

Mainly from parish books, personal ancestral trees and other literature. The summary is at http://burian.info/burian_int.pdf.

If someone would do the work to make a file of names after 1800, I would be pleased to publish here.

I found that BURIAN/BURJAN was also used as first name in the area of today Czech Republik, Slovakia and Poland at the time around 1550.

Burian of Sissói: The first one was a Burian Schellendorf of Hornsperg and Swietlau

Burian of Potstejn – 1577
Burian of Guttenstein – 1478, Sept. 14 : Herr vom Guttenstein zum Braitenstain, Oberstkämmerer im Böhmen, Hauptmann des Satzer und Rakonitzer Kreises

Johann Burian of Guttenstein ~ 1470: possessor of Rabenstein.  
Burian III. knight Trcka of Lipa was from year 1562 until his death year 1591 royal subchamberlain.

There is also one example from France:  Burian de  GRIESME died in Azincourt on  October 25th ,1415 at the battle against the Anglicans.

equals Burian Schellendorf, according the book about the family history of the Burian of Sissói.

For the time before documents have been written, we search for ancient place names which could be the root of the BURIAN surname.
So far we found:

Burjánfalva:  The “BURJŔN-Village”, a settlement in Transylvania. Today it is called Paulis, Romania.

Nant Burian:  Area near Saint-François Longchamp in France

Meaning of BURIAN in various languages:

in Hungarian: BURJAN ~ BURGYAN describes someone who doesn’t take care of his land.

in Arabian: The Muslim historian Ibn Khordadbekh mentions about the tribes of Burjan, as-Sakaliba, Abar settled on the North from Andalus. “Burjan, Bulgar, b. r. g. r, b. l. Kan” are the different types of the ethnonims of the Bulgar in the Arabic sources.

in Turkic: As Magyars and Ottomans have same roots in place and language, we asked Mr. Polat Kaya  about his opinion. He was friendly enough to send the following answers.

in Romanian: BURIAN means approximately storm.

in Armenian: BORIAN describes a family with blond hair and blue eyes.

in Farsi: BERYAN means roasted.
